Palm Treo 650 LCD Screen replacement HOWTO

Finally the items has arrived

Recently i bought a LCD screen replacement and a keypad board for my PDA Palm Treo on ebay since my LCD and keypad no longer functioning. At first i wanted to buy here .. so i went to scout lowyat area since they have a lot of mobile accesories and spare parts there.

I was able to find what im looking for.. but turns out.. the parts was damnn fucking expensive!!!.. the LCD itself cost around RM150-200 only for the LCD screen it self.. WTF!!! and the keypad board cost about RM50 for just a tiny piece of crap.. and the installation cost around RM100 . For opening and replacing the parts for the phone..? are you kidding..? it just because im using a palm phone..? WTF!!! and some more he insisted me to buy a new PDA.. Sorry guys.. i'm an palm addict.

So that is why i turned to ebay to find my PDA parts. You know how much it cost when i bought it from china thru ebay.

The new LCD screen

The keypad board

(already converted to Malaysian Ringgit)

LCD Screen = RM 45.00
Keypad Board = RM 12.00

So do the math guys.. how much profit they make perghhhh.. it seems like more than 200% profit to me. Yikes..

How bout the installation...?.

Nevermind... lets replace it ourself. Just to show you how simple it is to replace the parts.

So What do you need

1. Your Phone of course
2. Torx screwdriver
3. Housing opener

as for Torx screw. Basically it is different from the normal screw driver. The head shape looks like as below. Where can you find it. You can find it at any local hardware store. Just mention you need a Torx screwdriver. Or if any chance you drop to any pasar malam or night market, you're in luck they do have the torx there.. which cost you about RM2.00 per box.. it is cheaper there coz not many people will buy the screw driver.

The shape of the head

For the housing opener you can find it at lowyat i guess. most probably cost you few bucks. As for mine, my LCD included the plastic opener.

So lets start.

First, open the back cover of the casing

Identify the 7 screws that needs to be unscrew. Remove the battery and start to remove the screw one by one by using the Torx screw

Removing the screw

Then simply remove the antenna, the simcard casing.

After that by using the plastic opener, Peel the housing by sliding the opener thru the housing. By doing this the housing should split.

The housing finally open

This is my existing LCD screen that needs to be replace.

This is the LCD screen that i bought from ebay

So flip the phone to the back. As you can see the ribbon for the existing LCD still attached to the main board. If you see closely, there is a connector which hold the cable for the LCD.By using a flat screw driver, you can open the latch and then pull the cable.

As for the new LCD the step, is still the same, Just slide the cable ribbon thru the connector and then close the latch connector back. It should hold the ribbon cable

Then walaaaaaaa u can try to test the screen before putting it back together.Just hold the battery at the back and the push firmly. It should display the screen. If you didnt see any disply. Just check the cable connection again. It should be inserted properly.

After everything have been checked. LCD have a display.Keypad is functioning. Then assemble it back.

All set. Just took me less that 20 mins to replace the LCD screen. I saved RM 100 rather than giving to that guy. Deyyy 100 ringgit i can buy other things laa cittt pooodahhh!!!!

Check out the touch screen. Its working bebehhhh!!!! :)
